I have a cable actuated brakes on my little kawasaki. I took it out for a little bit and had to hit the brakes quickly. Now the front brake locks up on me when I apply it. And then it releases and sometimes it will just lock up for a split moment after I have released the brake. It seems to be catching. I checked the cable path etc. I think it is internal. I am not very familar with the internal workings of the brake. Does anyone know what it could be. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Brandon

It is a safe bet that cable brakes are drum brakes. You can try to reuse the cable using Dry Slide, but cables are only $20. If there is rust in the old one it isn't safe. It may be time for a front tire and tube as well. Get a new cable, wheel bearings, and new brake shoes for your Kow. Buy the giant economy size of brake clean, cheaper at WalMart. Choose an area to work in, put the bike on the center stand. Place blocks or bricks under the frame to lift the front wheel off the ground. Remove the old cable and route the new cable attaching it to the hand lever but not the brake. Remove the axle paying attention to the order of the spacers and speedo drive gear, don't loose them. Now the front wheel will come off and the brake drum can be opened. Either the brakes shoes are worn out or the preset if it has one is wrong. Clean it with the brake clean. If the bearings in the wheel don't roll smoothly, replace them. If Lincoln's head on a penny won't go in the tire tread up to his hair, replace the tire and tube. The preset holds the brake shoes close to the drum. If it is set too far back, the cable will pull too far and won't release (lock up). Replace the brake shoes by taking off the springs carefully. It does make a difference which shoe and which spring goes where. Reassemble the wheel, axle, spacer, speedo and attach the new cable to the brake.

sounds almost as if one of the shoes is hanging up. perhaps one of the springs is faulty.
