ok the bike idles fine when you just start it(1500rpm) but after you ride it around for say 10-15 min, the idle jumps up to 4000rpm in neutral, but if you put it in gear it goes back to around 2000rpms, any clue why???? thanks
Seems to be alot of folks having this issue. For me, I always go to the check the intake gaskets for leaks. But that's just a guess from here.

My 96 FLSTF did it to me Sunday. I was about 150 miles into a ride and stopped at a red light and the idle jumped up to around 3 grand from it's normal around 600. I reached down, yanked the choke knob out, pushed it back in, and the idle went back to normal.
Sounds like I may have some carb service coming soon.

New member, I drive an xs 850 regular and there is some info missing. When I start the bike, I full choke it and then the idle is around 1500 - 1800. When I start driving, it's at half choke for a mile or two. When it gets warmed up (I'm in Wisconsin) the bike idles around 1100. If your bike idles at 2000 driving down the road, someone probably bumped up the idle to cover up other issues. These range from minor (dump in some carb cleaner in the gas) to major (carb rebuild). Adjusting the idle is at the handgrip and you have to futz with it for a while as it is VERY TOUCHY. The bike goes from idle to race very easily and it can take some trial and error to get what you want.
Thanks for the heads up Jim. Welcome to the forum.

I have owned two Yamaha XS's in the past, and the idle adjustments are done at the carbs, not at the handgrip. The adjustment at the handgrip is just meant to take up slack in the cable as the cable stretches. The actual adjustment is at the carbs.
