Hi I Just joined, into in rider check in. I have a 02 v star 650 custom. I have had it about little over a month now, and have been enjoying it. It had 6886 miles when I got and is clean and looks new. Its has a hyper chager, cobra pipes and lots chrome. I do know the last owner did not jet carbs so that is on list to do with other things. I have been trying to find a service manual for it, I want to do some work to the forks, I think they have a lowering kit in them, and want to look into them and see but know nothing about the bike or forks for that matter. I do have plenty mechanical ability so I cna do work myself. Also is there other pipes out there that aren't exspensive or name brand like cobra or vance and hines. I want a different set but don't want to pay big bucks for the name. Thanks for any info one might have. And thanks for haveing me aboard!

except most of the v star 650 riders are like me and don't know nuttin.

i'm also on the look out for awesome pipes for little cash if possible. so someone that knows anything let us know. somebody sent me a really good article on gutting out stock pipes, but i'm leery about that because of the jetting issue.

Well gutting the stock pipes will help. Now as far as jetting you may have to as to match the exhaust flow, but my ride buddy gutted his pipes on his 04 vulcan 800 and hasn't had any problems, it has popped a little. Mine though causeing haveing the hypercharger and cobra drag pipes on it does pop at a certain point in throttle so I have to jet it to match everything. Only thing I don't like about the drag pipes is on a small displacement motor it makes it loud and has a sharp edge to it, so I am going to get some stock pipes and gut them and use the bell end or get a truck exhaust 3 inch tip and use that as a bell. What it will do is allow the sound waves time to expand so it doesn't have a loud sharp edge. Vance and hines has a set of pipes that will make small bikes sound like a bigger bike, there set cost about 319 bucks is cheapest so far I have seen them. You may be able to custom build a exhaust system just keep in mind they have to match and have equal back pressure or the bike won't run right. You can do a google search for yamaha motorcycle exhaust pipes, is how I found some ideas for mine to work with.

I cant believe the bike even ran without jetting after the Hypercharger. Mine would idle OK, but as soon as tried to move it SERIOUSLY fell on its face.

Get the pipes jetted and have a service tech that knows what he is doing do the job. Why something on your bike you and not quilified for. It will always cost more to do it wrong the first time than getting it right.
