I run nothing but amsoil 20w50
What kind of oil you running?lberkey 12-13-2005, 09:40 PM I run nothing but amsoil 20w50 Deek 12-14-2005, 09:43 AM I willingly admit that the Syn. oils are superior, but was questioning the cost per performance issue. There are bikes and cars that put massive amounts of miles on their motors with Dino oils, but are also well maintained. I'm trying to decide if Syn oils are worth 3 or 4 times the money per qt. That's a really good point, and I don't have an answer. I think most of us will never be able to say that the higher priced synthetic oils are better than the dino oils "in the cost per performance issue". It would take quite a bit of scientific testing to prove to me either way. In the final analysis, I'm pretty sure if one ran an air cooled motorcycle engine full out in horrible conditions, its performance would be better than running the same conditions with a dino oil. But at what cost? If the syn bike ran that way for 10,000 hours and the dino only went for 8,500 hours before blowing up, is that really significant? I figure I run my bike about 10 hrs a week max. At that rate, thought would be 850 weeks , or about 17 YEARS of my use before the engine blew up. So if I ran syn oil I'd get maybe 19.5 YEARS. I don't know about you guys, but that's PROBABLY not enough difference in longevity! <g> In my case I run synthetic, even though it costs about 3 times as much as good quality dino oil, just because we're talking about my baby here. It doesn't need to be waxed as often as I do it either. My wife can't understand why I go into the garage, then take its cover off and wax it once a week.<g> chesshirecat 12-15-2005, 06:20 AM I like the syn-III....run it in the crankcase...run it in the tranny....not afraid that it will break down viscosity while on long trips before I get to where I am comfortable to change it. While Dino is great for the break in period...and yes I do agree that the break in should be done with the real thing....once you get past that...the heat of the summer is best handled with syn....thats my story and I am gonna stick with it... Chessie Oil Doc 01-01-2006, 10:48 AM I have a new 28 page Test Report on Motorcycle Oils....If anyone would like it, please email me as long as your email will accept a document that size. FX 05-18-2006, 12:18 PM This is a study of motorcycle oils done by amsoil. Our own Oil Doc sells Amsoil and thought this would be good information to share with the other Rider Info members. It is a very comprehensive study. The document is in Adobe PDF format, so you will need that plugin to view this oil study. Get Adobe Acrobat Reader (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html) if you need the plugin. This is the Motorcycle Oil Study (http://www.riderinfo.com/news_images/motorcycle_oil_study_by_amsoil.pdf) document link. Hopefully with some facts on the table we can make more sense of the different motorcycle oils. bufordtpisser 05-18-2006, 01:08 PM The fact that it was sponsered by AmsOil will no doubt have some wondering about the validity of the test. I for one, have used most of the oils in the test. While I do not have access to all of these fancy testing facilities, my experiences have led me to the same conclusions. Dollar for dollar, the AmsOil is the best value and protects my bike the best. We have all no doubt paid good money for our rides. Should we not protect them with good products. While there are others out their that work, I believe that these tests should go a long way in helping you make an informed decision about what is the best oil for your bike. Thanks Doc for making this available, and thanks FX for posting it. FX 05-18-2006, 01:12 PM Yep, I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything. I do think there are many usable facts in the study and it can help us make choices though. Oil Doc 05-18-2006, 07:38 PM Yes, AMSOIL did the study, but it was certified by outside people which I think is documented on the last page. AMSOIL did Not come out in every category, but when each test was rated and the points totaled, AMSOIL was the clear leader. I have sold AMSOIL for over 22 years, I enjoy it or I wouldn't do it, I also believe in it or I wouldn't sell it. I like to put it this way.... I don't sell AMSOIL because of the things they say about it, I sell it because I can say the things about it that I do ! Just remember, I will sell directly at Dealer cost to any Forum Member. You can't buy it any cheaper if you were a dealer yourself and as long as you live in the lower 48 except Florida, there is no sales tax... sorry FX... I bought it new in 03, and have over 72,000 miles on it. A lot of the riders in my chapter have gone to syn. oil, and so far no one has had any trouble. BTW, I left another board, dedicated to wing riders because threads like this one would degenerate into flame wars. It's nice to see everyone just traiding infomation. Dave:usa: Choke03RKC1 08-19-2006, 09:16 PM Started with HD 20/50...then switched to HD SYN3 in all locations...Now I use Mobil1 in the engine and trans of the Road King and V-Rod with Formula+ in the primary of the Road King. Both bikes ran fine always...change every 3000 miles. Choke Runningwolf 08-19-2006, 09:56 PM Cool about the synth oil. I want to change oils after the service check up. maybe I can accumulate some great info here and make a decision on which seems to work best. |
