Like the knee that jerks when the doctor taps it, the crowd's outraged response last week to changing Bike Week and bettering Main Street was sadly predictable.

Just what outlandish ideas did the Daytona Beach city manager suggest at the City Commission's Bike Week workshop?

That the privileges allowed to merchants on Main Street and Beach Street be extended to all businesses. That only businesses that sell alcohol during the year be allowed to sell it during biker events. That parking lots be paved. That leasing property solely to host traveling salesmen be stopped.

Simple suggestions, sensible sugges-

tions, suggestions other city's leaders would smile about because they've been in effect in their cities for years. Unpaved lots on a premier street? Unthinkable! Favoring some businesses over others? Foolhardy! Using vacant lots to hold tents for two weeks rather than businesses year round? Insane!
