The carb float was stuck and gas was leaking out.
I closed the petcock and ran the carb dry and disconnected the bottom hose from the in-line fuel filter and "blew" into the hose to try and blow out the crap that was causing the float to stick open.
It worked...no more gas coming out.
Now! Here is the thing that has me wanting to have my bike towed to the "tooler's".
When, I started her up again to leave from work...I had my left foot on the forward controls and what happened was like a back fire sound, but what I felt through my foot that was on my peg....was a slam!!!! and there was a puff of smoke that seemed to have occured from the front of the bike(from the oil filter region)...not like a backfire through the air filter!
It was like having your hand on a piece of metal and having someone hit it with a sledge hammer... I restarted the engine, and everything seemed OK, but she seems to sound louder. I am thinking that I may be being paranoid after the "slam" effect.
The bike seems to run OK....15 miles home, but I am very concerned about that slam that I felt through the foot peg.
Could a back fire in mid stroke cause the part's inside to slam backwards and create that slam that I felt in the foot peg?
bigwater 04-28-2008, 02:53 AM Sounds like pre-ignition to me. This can occur when you are using to low of an octane rated fuel in a higher compression engine, and the fuel spontaneously combusts prior to the spark due to the heat caused by the compression stroke. The fact that you flooded the carbs could have easily contributed to this. What is the compression ratio of the motor and what grade of fuel are you running in it?

c.crawford 04-28-2008, 09:23 AM Get a small sample of oil from your crankcase or dipstick and see if it will burn when you pass a flame from a cigarette lighter over it. I'm worried that your oil has been diluted. Maybe some of the gasoline went down the intake, past the valve, rings and into the oil. But most likely it was just enough gas to make it backfire inside the crankcase. Changing the oil and filter now might prevent problems.

Ron I don't know the ratio, but I use 93 Octane in the bike. The engine is a 111 cu inch S&S.

bigwater 04-29-2008, 12:35 AM Some places don't need much moderation Lenny. This place moderates itself for the most part because everybody respects each other... and I'm proud that we've built RI up to that.
Of course there will always be the occasional rable rouser that we have to deal with in the back room with rubber hoses and brass knuckles, but that's all top secret and we don't talk about it much ;)
