Ihave a question maybe someone can help with.
Looking for a new bike and trying to decide which to go with. Liquid cooling or air cooled. Would appreciate some input.
Thanks

Don't ask me...I'm still waiting to see if they've perfected electric start enough to trust it.

There are so many factors to consider. To recomend one or the other would be assumptive.

Compare price, maintenace costs, maintenace labor, and consider your riding conditions and abilities to perform maintenance.

I'm gonna go historically tactical on this one. Prior to World War II, there were two schools of thought when it came to military aircraft engines. Water cooled, vs. Air cooled. The air-cooled "mafia" stated that air cooled was simplier, lighter, and easier to repair in the field. The water-cooled "mafia" stated that all that REALLY mattered in war time was performance, cost and weight be dammed.
The P-51 Mustang, The P-38 Lightning, and British Spitfire were all water cooled engine designs. The F4-U Corsair, the B-17 bomber, the Focke-Wulf 190, and F4F Wildcat all come to mind as famous air-cooled war planes.
Which was "better"? That argument is STILL going on nearly 60 years later. All were good designs, and all of them worked well. Moral of the story....I guess there really isn't one. Buy what you like, and be aware of the limitations of each.

Would that fact that they use them as "reverse gears" on some motorcycles qualify them as perfected? :idunno:

I'm with ya', Panheader. If I had my way, every motorcyle would still come with a kick-starter. The dreaded "click" of a weak battery is the saddest sound in motorcycling.

And it usually happens alone, in a parking lot, at 2am.

There is a spot in the combustion chamber between intake and exhaust valve that gets dangerously close to the melting point of aluminum alloy when the motor is developing maximum output in any gear including reverse. Besides, air cooled naked motorcycles look much better than plastic.
