Worn out exhaust question

You well know how quiet 2003 1100 Spirit OEM mufflers are and I know many threads have delt with this. However, has anyone simply punched, let's say, several 1/4" holes in the end baffle plate around the center pipe? And if so, did the engine run lean enough to be concerned about on highway rides? I'd sure like to keep my original mufflers but pick them up a few decibels.

The back pressure would be affected for sure. I don't know these bikes but I'm gonna say if computer controlled, the tuning of the system matters.
