Two Senators from Florida have proposed a ban on the use of tasers for law enforcement. They consider the use of tasers dangerous and believe the product has not been researched properly regarding the safety of it's use.
Senators Tony Hill and Gary Siplin are asking for 1.5 million dollars to study the devices affects. The proposed legislation would also ban use of Tasers on school children.
Please call and write these Senators supporting them. These tasers kill people.

That's the problem though, that is not a proven fact.
They are torturing people for hours before they die from this. A trauma event is not cool even if you live. They can not possibly tell if it's safe to use on you or me objectively in the heat of a moment. If they don't need enough force to shoot me, then they certainly don't need to electrocute me.
Come on folks, this is state scantioned control by shock therapy!
My wife is an ER nurse. She would rather be shot. The unseen damage from electrocution can kill you 3 days later. With a gunshot wound you have a way better change of survial then an electrocution.
Sheriff Beary says it's ok in Orange County Florida because he had it done to him. Well the sheriff had a man hold him up, had a doctor present, was drug free(people take legal drugs too Sheriff, not all drug takers are low lifes), he had his heart checked first. His exibition was totally scripted and supervised, a complete farce.
There are allegations he wants the tasers so bad because he profits from them, that has yet to be proven though.
84FLH 03-13-2005, 07:11 PM Do we have access to statistics, such as how many people hit with tassers that died vs. people who survive? I'd be willing to bet that far more survive a tasser than a gunshot wound.
A tasser is the alternative to a gun, and should only be used when a situation warrants use of deadly force.

Ah yes, but it is so subjective. Can you define it? I don't think anyone can.
80 people have been killed by cops in Florida with tasers in the last four years. Cops are killing people for small crimes, these are not mass murderers or the sort, these are regular street folks. They tasered an 11 year old girl in the back. Not cool!
84FLH 03-13-2005, 08:28 PM Not to sure what ya want me to define  Deadly Force? If so it can be defined, officers of the law and correctional services do it every day.
I am aware of the kid(s) that were tased, the first was a young boy in a Principals office, he possessed a piece of glass, IMO considering the boy's age, weapon and situation as described by the media this was not a warrant of deadly force. The second child was a girl not sure on the age but I think she was twelve, she was actually running away from the cop when tased, she possessed no weapon and was believed to be under the influence of alcohol. This IMO was not a warrant for deadly force ...sounds to me a big part of the problem is the cops themselves and not so much the taser. As I said before, these things should be viewed as a alternative for a gun and used only when a situation warrants deadly force. Almost appears that they are using it in just any ole situation, as an alternative to having to get physical in any matter.
Now you're coming around. ;)
Thanks for the replies. I wish more would discuss it.
My initial thought is the same as 84, I'd rather be tasered then shot. :shoot3:
The problem arises when these kids are tasered who the police would have never dreamed of shooting.
At that point it doesn't become a choice between shooting and tasering but a choice between tasering and tackling.
A drunk, truant 12 year old should not be tasered and if the cops can't draw that distinction they shouldn't be allowed to carry tasers. :)
That's my point. Who is going to make sure every cop has the proper judgement?
Get one cop with a perp that is a pain in the ass and he may use his/her taser just cause he is sick of the person eventually.
Most cops know their perps and would know if they are a cocaine junky, when that cop uses a taster they have made a life and death decision for that person in a situation where if they had done their job as a team, they could subdue the person without electrocution.
Were talking about people dieing over a misdemeanor in most cases.
84FLH 03-14-2005, 02:36 PM Well this is where the upper levels of law enforcement or even government at State or Federal levels need to step in and create a procedure. The same type they have in place for the discharging of a firearm and see that it is adheard to. There has to be a procedure for drawing and firing your service weapon in the line of duty. Treat the tasers in the same manner. The officers will have to answer to their superiors in the invent of an incident. Disciplinary measures to the offending officer would have to be implemented in the case where procedure was not followed. Make it so they cannot use the taser unless the situation warrants. Make the officer accountable for his actions. I'm not real familiar with the law enforcement down south there, but I know we here have procedures that must be followed. For instance, here if an officer just draws his weapon he/she has to file a report as to why. Damn you can't even use Pepper spray here without just cause. Truth of the matter is, it's most likely time to real in on the cops end if folks are being hit with tasers and dying for misdemeanors.
Very good position and advice. I hope the powers that be down here can follow what seems to be a good policy in your area.
