 Excellent reading, though outdated
This is an excellent book! I read it from cover to cover, with exception of the appendixes, in less than a week. Lots of helpful information for anyone from would-be's to pro's. Contains everything from riding techniques to bike-shopping tips to safety info to... anything you need to know about motorcycles. I'm lending it to a friend.
I purchased the second edition, and there are a few things that date the book, like a reference to low gas prices (snicker snicker); but anything that could be considered outdated is not among the "important stuff." If there's an older edition for cheap, don't worry about getting the newer edition.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Motorcycles, Third Edition
A good basic book that gives an overview of what a motorcycle is, its characteristics, and different versions of it.
 The best guide for the beginning and experienced rider
Not sure what gear to get for certain trips, a new biker unsure of where to come from on how to ride, a new biker unsure of where to get a bike or even which bike to get, you need this book. It is a fantastic resource for those who are new to biking, curious, or even need just a good resource book. I have it on my shelf in my garage and got it shortly before I started biking. I read it cover to cover because it really is preparing you for a life of biking and what you are getting yourself into financially and time management wise. You would be loathe to start a life of biking without getting this book.
Good refernce book for beginners
This is a good book to read to learn about the basics of motorcycling and riding.
Idiot's Guide to Motorcycles
This is a thoughtfully and well-written book for would-be beginners.
The author does an excellent job of acquainting the novice with all the charm, excitement, work and dangers of owning and riding motorcycles.
He convinced this 78-year-old to engage in something less demanding.
But only regretfully so.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in motorcycling.
